Bike for Sight
I have been a member of Lions Clubs for almost 30 years, beginning when I lived in Iowa and continuing through today. Lions Clubs International is the largest service organization in the world and it has a focus on sight and hearing preservation. The Omaha Sunrise Lions Club I belong to helps to provide eyeglasses and hearing aides to the needy as well as Leader Dogs for the blind and Hearing Dogs for the deaf. We also provide annual scholarships to high school seniors with visual or hearing impairment who want to attend college.
There are many organizations working towards these same goal and we like to work together whenever possible. Last week our club found out about a "Bike For Sight" event being sponsored through the UNMC department of ophthalmology and scheduled for Saturday, April 14, 2012. Riders are welcome for a registration fee of $20 and each $20 fee will fund one cataract surgery when a team of ophthalmologists visits Haiti later this year. It is hard to think of a better way to spend a beautiful spring morning.
If you happen to be someone who is into biking you may also want to consider the Landmark TriState Relay to be held on June 16, 2012. It is a 170 mile ride from Omaha to Rock Port, MO and back and can be done individually or as a member of a relay team. Check out that web site for more information.
