Walkable Communities in Omaha, Nebraska

You may read my title, "Walkable Communities in Omaha, Nebraska", and think to yourself... is this something new? People in Omaha walk places? Well, sadly as you drive around town you will notice that almost never do you see people walking anywhere-- except from the parking lot to the building they are going to. I am guilty of this as well, but I wonder....Why is Omaha like this?

How to Find Your Walk Score
There is a great website called Walk Score, which has a lot of really cool features that may get you thinking about how often you drive in the city. When you first go to the website, you can type your address in the box at the top of the page.

After you enter your address, it will take you to a page that will display your home/business/location's walk score. The scale is a 0-100 scale. Click here to see the scale.

How long would it take you to walk?
Another really unique feature of Walk Score is that you can go on their website, type in your address, and then type in the address of a place you commute to. By entering this information, it will generate a list for you of how long it would take you to Walk, Bicycle, or Drive from point A to point B!

It is really interesting to see how long it would take you to walk to work, or bicycle to the grocery store. Give it a try-- it may not take as long as you think!

So.. back to the title. Unfortunately, Omaha is not one of the most walkable cities in the country. In a study of 83 metros, Omaha ranked 78th most sprawling-- meaning we are almost at the bottom when it comes to walkabilitiy. We can all do our part in changing Omaha by deciding to walk or bicycle somewhere for a change. I think Omaha is one of the greatest cities in the world, but its time for a change towards a more pedestrian friendly city!
