Hal Daub's Best You

Colossians 3:23 "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters."

Hal was the Mayor once and Congressman twice. He made more of an impact in Omaha than anyone else has. Some of his projects include: West Dodge Expressway, Quest Center, TDAmeritrade Center, Heartland of America Park, and Rick's Boathouse.

Storage WARS!

When you hear of storage wars most of you probably think of the t.v. shows. In real life it is not as glamorous, but still can be exciting. Sometimes you can hit the jackpot while others you just have to take the loss. One thing that is similar to the show is you cannot go through the entire unit. We only allow you to stand outside of the unit and look in to see if it is something that you are interested in. Once you decide and the time to look around is up we start the BIDDING! Whoever wins is responsible for everything in the unit. Come out and join us the last Thursday every month.

Always hire who you want and let the people not performing go

I have been taking a once a month year long training class at Sandler Training in Omaha, NE about successfully managing a sales team.  So far I have attended two meetings and have gained a wealth of knowledge.  I want to talk about the first meeting, because you really can make so many changes to the base of a company with this advice.

We started off with making a job description that completely details exactly who you want on your team and who not.   With this there is no compromising on what you want out of an employee, everything is written out and explained in black & white.  Also noted on the job description, states to not apply if you don't fit, capable and comfortable 100% with everything on the description.  You will never hear me say "I think this person will work for the time being, to fill a position".  I will only hire someone that fits everything I am looking for, this will only make my job easier.

What most managers do is hire someone to fill the position, to have someone start to work because they are so busy, that is completely wrong!  Hire the correct right person, and you don't have to worry about them not performing or doing what has been explained from day 1.

Also covered in the first meeting was the point to always let your direct reports know where they are standing on a weekly or monthly basis, goal wise.  This will in return make your direct report want to be on top. The last thing someone wants to see is their name on the bottom of a list.  With that we also talked about the benefits of always hiring, because if you team is lacking somewhere you need to let someone else take over who can perform to being on top.

Lastly, I would like to post that Dino's Storage is currently hiring for Property Managers in Nebraska and Iowa.  Please click the link visit Dino's Storage website for more information and a job description.

Residence at Dino's Storage

Wow!!! I thought I had heard just about everything!!!! I know that the homeless population is all over the United States right now and getting worse with the economy being the way it is. When I came in to check my messages this weekend I found out that one of my tenants was using his drive up storage space as a residence!

Now I realize that it has four walls and is out of the wind, but the storage garages at Dino's Storage are not residences and it is against Dino's policies for anyone to stay in their storage unit. Hopefully we don't have to deal with this problem again!

Dino's Storage Payments

Most people know how to pay their storage bill and don't ever have an issue with payments. But there are others who either do not put their unit number on their check/money order, or they have someone else send it in and don't include their name on the payment. This is how errors happen in the payment process. You would not believe how many John Smiths I have in my system. Without a unit number on your payment, I have no idea which John Smith that payment belongs to. When situations like this happen I can sometimes look at the address on the payment and narrow it down that way, but this doesn't always work. Sometimes I get money order payments with no name, address or unit number at all.

In cases like the ones that I speak about above the customer ends up getting locked out of their unit and getting late fees, when in all actuality they did pay on time. It is very easy for me to change the payment and add it to the correct account but it would make it even easier on you and me if the error didn't happen in the first place.

Please remember to always put your unit number on your payment! If you are not sure of your unit number, you can always call your property manager and they would be happy to give you that information, as it would save them time in the long run as well.

Acting

"However many holy words you read, however many you speak, what good will they do if you do not act upon them?" - Buddha

One thing many people seem to remember about Landmark Group and Dino's Storage is that we are the ones with "those boards." We put biblical quotes on our reader boards at every Dino's Storage location and on the Landmark Group board, often offering advice to live by, lessons to remember or warnings for those who stray.

Every morning when I drive into work, I see the message on the reader board and think for a moment about the words it's sharing, but that is not enough. Contemplating these words is one thing, but doing them is another step entirely - much like many things in life. Like Buddha said, what good are these words if we don't act upon them? Why even spread the messages if that's as far as they get?
